First Contact with Code

Introduction to software development

For someone who has never written a line of code, from the very beginning. We start with what a computer actually does and finish four weeks later with your own small page, live on the internet.

What you end up with

By the end of the workshop you can do these

  • Explain, line by line, what a program actually does
  • Get over the fear of the terminal: move between folders, open files, run commands
  • Build a page from scratch with HTML and CSS
  • Make that page do something with JavaScript
  • Save your work with Git and publish it on the internet
  • Know how to search — and how to ask an AI — when you get stuck
Programme

What we cover, week by week

Week 1 How does this thing work?

90 min

  • Program, file, browser, server — a mental map in five minutes
  • Opening the terminal for the first time without getting lost in it
  • Setting up a code editor and writing your first file
  • Homework: your first page, running on your own computer
Week 2 You build the page

90 min

  • HTML: the skeleton of content — why tags exist at all
  • CSS: dressing that skeleton, thinking mobile first
  • Learning to read code instead of copy-pasting it
  • Homework: a single page about yourself
Week 3 Now make the page do something

90 min

  • Variables, conditions, loops — half of programming in three ideas
  • Making something happen when a button is pressed
  • Reading an error message: text to read, not something to fear
  • Homework: a small calculator or list
Week 4 Ship it

90 min

  • Git and GitHub: the comfort of being able to undo
  • Putting the project on the internet for free
  • What to learn after this — an honest roadmap
  • Closing: everyone shares their link

Who is teaching you this?

Gizem Güney

Gizem Güney Software developer

  • Her TÜBİTAK-backed capstone project was approved: a sub-system integrated into a fraud detection system that identifies AI-generated content.
  • She has worked as a backend developer: services and MongoDB data models at Pawlo, Next.js and TypeScript interfaces at AkademiQ.AI.
  • She studies software engineering at école 42 in Paris; still on the learning side herself, she has not forgotten what "I did not follow that part" feels like.
  • Git, Docker and the terminal are daily tools for her; the path she teaches is the path she uses.

Who is this workshop for?

It suits you if…

  • You have never written code and do not know where to start
  • You are thinking about changing careers but stuck on "is this even for me?"
  • You work with a technical team and do not follow the language they speak

It does not suit you if…

  • You already write code and want to learn a framework
  • You are looking for a bootcamp that promises a job in two weeks
  • You cannot attend any of the live sessions — recordings exist, but the workshop runs live
If this is the wrong door

Then it is probably one of these two

The three workshops do not compete with each other; they answer different questions. If you read this page and thought "not for me", here is where to go instead.
